As the seasons shift and the year winds down, I’ve been thinking a lot about gratitude—not just the kind we talk about during the holidays, but the quieter, gentler kind that shows up in the small moments we often overlook. Being thankful doesn’t require grand gestures or picture-perfect days. More often, it’s hidden in the ordinary rhythms of life, waiting for us to notice.
The Beauty in Simple Moments
There’s something grounding about pausing long enough to appreciate the soft, steady moments that make up our days. A warm cup of coffee in the morning. A wagging tail greeting you at the door. A laugh shared with someone you love. These aren’t monumental events, but they anchor us. They remind us that joy doesn’t always need to be big to be meaningful.
Lessons from Our Four-Legged Friends
If there’s anyone who understands gratitude intuitively, it’s our dogs. Koa teaches me this every single day. He doesn’t care about yesterday or tomorrow—he cares about now. A walk in the park? Best day ever. A cozy nap with his favorite blanket? Pure bliss. A chance to help someone smile as a therapy dog? His heart is full.
Dogs remind us that gratitude isn’t something to chase—it’s something to feel. It’s presence. It’s connection. It’s noticing what’s right in front of you.
Gratitude as a Practice
Being thankful is a muscle, and like any muscle, it strengthens with use. That looks different for everyone. For some, it’s journaling. For others, it’s a nightly reflection. And sometimes, it’s as simple as taking one intentional breath and saying, “I’m grateful for this moment.”
When life feels overwhelming, gratitude becomes a compass. It doesn’t erase challenges, but it reframes them. It reminds us of what we’ve overcome, who has supported us, and what still brings us light.
The Ripple Effect of Thankfulness
There is a quiet power in expressing gratitude outwardly. A heartfelt “thank you.” A text to a friend. A small gesture of kindness. These moments create connection, and connection creates community. That’s where the magic is.
Whether I’m writing a children’s book, sharing Koa’s adventures, or simply walking through New York City with him by my side, I’m constantly reminded of how much there is to appreciate—how much love, joy, and goodness exist even on the busiest days.
Today, I’m Thankful For…
The work that inspires me.The people who support me.The opportunity to create stories that help kids feel seen. The resilience it takes to chase a dream. And always, without question—Koa, whose heart shows me what gratitude looks like in motion.
